I'm one subway stop from Manhattan: 3 blocks from the F& M lines, 4 blocks from the 7 line.
My passion is creating custom carvings to tell my clients' stories, using animal imagery that has personal meaning. Every tree, every piece of wood is numinous with spirit, and my job is to coax out that resident spirit, make it visible for my clients and their families. Perhaps one reason so many of my original designs turn out to be guardian figures: trees are peaceful and watchful!
I first set mallet to chisel 28 years ago. I carve wood using the same tools and techniques that ancient civilizations employed, and feel privileged to be a link in the chain of artisan-artists who've passed this knowlege, person to person, through the centuries. I love teaching woodcarving, knowing I'm also handing forward a rare and precious skill.
